Malnutrition

Malnutrition occurs when an individual does not meet their required nutritional needs.  This can happen when we don’t consume enough food for our bodies or our bodies are unable to absorb all the nutrients due to underlying health conditions such as coeliac disease.

Even in a first world country like Australia, malnutrition is a serious public health concern.  An estimation of over 50% of our aged care population are currently at risk of or have malnutrition. Malnutrition screening and early intervention provides the best outcomes for those at risk of becoming malnourished.  Dietitians have the ability to provide the necessary screening as well as providing education and ongoing support to the individual with malnutrition but also the health professionals supporting the person.

Some indications of malnutrition include:

  • Loss of appetite

  • Unintentional weight loss

  • Changes in hair growth/loss

  • Pale skin

  • Fatigue, mental confusion

  • Poor wound healing

Some other indications for malnutrition is to ask yourself;

  1. Are my clothes feeling looser, have I changed the hole on my belt?

  2. Are you eating less or skipping meals?

  3. Are foods not as enjoyable anymore?

  4. Are your dentures loose, is your jewellery loose?

Once malnutrition has been identified, your dietitian and other health professionals will work closely with you to provide education and ongoing management of your dietary intake.  Some simple tip to assist with improving nutritional intake includes;

  • Add some powdered milk to the milk you use throughout the day

  • Eat the protein (meat) portion of every meal first

  • Add a bowl of yoghurt after each lunch and dinner

  • Eat smaller more frequent meals

If you feel you're are at risk of malnutrition or know someone who is dealing with malnutrition, please contact our dietitian today to receive the education and support needed to improve your nutrition.
