Hydration

Hydration - it’s not just clear pee.

I have heard it over and over that as long as your pee is clear then you are hydrated. Yes the colour of your pee can be a good indicator of your level of hydration, but like many areas of health it is more complex than that. Having worked for several years in industries such as power generation, mining and in metal manufacturing, i have learnt the importance of maintaining hydration levels as well as the potential dangers of not maintaining adequate hydration.

Let’s get a bit science and call it cellular hydration. Cellular hydration or the process of maintaining proper fluid balance within cells, is crucial for overall health and well-being. Water is the most essential nutrient for life, and every cell in the body requires water to function properly.

The importance of cellular hydration can be seen in many different aspects of health:

  • Proper hydration supports physical performance: Adequate hydration is essential for maintaining physical performance, particularly during exercise. Dehydration can lead to decreased endurance, reduced strength, impaired cognitive function and might increase risk of injury.

    • Improving endurance: Proper hydration helps to maintain blood volume, which in turn supports cardiovascular function and endurance during exercise. Dehydration, on the other hand, can lead to a decrease in blood volume, which can make it harder to maintain endurance and can also increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

    • Enhancing strength and power: Adequate hydration helps to maintain muscle function and can also enhance muscle power and strength. Dehydration, on the other hand, can lead to muscle fatigue and weakness, which can reduce overall physical performance.

    • Improving cognitive function: Proper hydration is important for maintaining healthy brain function, including cognitive function and concentration. Dehydration, on the other hand, can lead to headaches, dizziness, and confusion, which can impair overall physical performance.

    • Reducing the risk of injury: Proper hydration can help to reduce the risk of injury during exercise by supporting healthy muscle function and reducing the risk of muscle cramps and strains. Dehydration, on the other hand, can increase the risk of injury by impairing muscle function and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

  • Hydration is important for cardiovascular health: Proper hydration helps to maintain healthy blood volume and circulation, Support healthy heart function, reduce the risk of blood clots, maintain electrolyte balance, all of which can help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

    • Maintaining healthy blood volume: Water is a major component of blood, and proper hydration helps to maintain healthy blood volume. When the body is well-hydrated, the blood is able to flow more easily through the blood vessels, which can help to maintain healthy blood pressure and circulation.

    • Supporting healthy heart function: Proper hydration helps to maintain healthy heart function by supporting the flow of blood through the heart and reducing the risk of heart-related conditions such as stroke and heart attack.

    • Reducing the risk of blood clots: Proper hydration can help to reduce the risk of blood clots by making the blood less viscous and more able to flow freely through the blood vessels.

    • Maintaining healthy electrolyte balance: Electrolytes such as sodium and potassium play an important role in regulating blood pressure and heart function, and proper hydration helps to maintain healthy electrolyte balance in the body.

    • Reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease: Adequate hydration has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, stroke, and hypertension.

  • Cellular hydration supports immune function: Adequate hydration is important for healthy immune function, as it helps to flush out toxins and waste products from the body.

    • Flushing out toxins and waste products: Adequate hydration helps to flush out toxins and waste products from the body, which can reduce the burden on the immune system and allow it to function more efficiently.

    • Supporting lymphatic system function: The lymphatic system plays an important role in immune function, and proper hydration helps to support healthy lymphatic system function. When the body is well-hydrated, lymphatic fluid is able to flow more freely through the body, which can help to transport immune cells to areas of infection and disease.

    • Enhancing immune cell function: Immune cells such as white blood cells require water to function properly, and proper hydration can enhance the function of these cells. When the body is well-hydrated, immune cells are better able to identify and fight infections and diseases.

    • Reducing the risk of dehydration-related illnesses: Dehydration can weaken the immune system and increase the risk of illnesses such as urinary tract infections and respiratory infections. Adequate hydration can help to reduce the risk of these illnesses by supporting healthy immune function.

  • Proper hydration supports healthy digestion: Water is essential for the proper digestion and absorption of nutrients from food, and it helps to maintain healthy bowel function.

    • Maintaining healthy bowel movements: Proper hydration is essential for maintaining regular bowel movements and preventing constipation. When the body is well-hydrated, stool is able to move more easily through the digestive tract, which can help to prevent constipation and other digestive issues.

    • Enhancing nutrient absorption: Water is important for breaking down and absorbing nutrients from food, and proper hydration can enhance the body's ability to absorb these nutrients. When the body is well-hydrated, the digestive system is better able to break down and absorb nutrients from food, which can support overall health and well-being.

    • Supporting healthy gut bacteria: Adequate hydration is important for supporting the growth and function of healthy gut bacteria. When the body is well-hydrated, the digestive system is better able to support the growth of healthy gut bacteria, which can help to support healthy digestion and immune function.

    • Reducing the risk of digestive disorders: Dehydration can increase the risk of digestive disorders such as acid reflux and ulcers. Adequate hydration can help to reduce the risk of these conditions by supporting healthy digestive function.

  • Hydration supports healthy skin: Proper hydration helps to keep the skin looking healthy and hydrated, and it can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

    • Maintaining skin moisture: Water is essential for maintaining skin moisture and preventing dryness and dehydration. When the body is well-hydrated, the skin is better able to retain moisture, which can improve its overall appearance and prevent dryness and flakiness.

    • Supporting skin elasticity: Adequate hydration helps to support the skin's elasticity and firmness. When the body is well-hydrated, the skin is better able to maintain its structure and prevent sagging and wrinkles.

    • Enhancing skin tone: Proper hydration can help to enhance skin tone and texture by improving blood flow and nutrient delivery to the skin. When the body is well-hydrated, the skin is better able to receive the nutrients it needs to maintain its health and appearance.

    • Flushing out toxins: Adequate hydration helps to flush out toxins and waste products from the body, which can help to improve skin clarity and reduce the risk of breakouts and other skin issues.

    • Reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles: Dehydration can exacerbate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while proper hydration can help to minimise their appearance by maintaining skin elasticity and moisture.

As you can see, cellular hydration is not just about having clear pee. It is far more complex and important in every single cellular activity that occurs in your body every day and there are trillions of cells in every person's body that are responsible for carrying out processes such as energy production, nutrient uptake, waste removal, DNA replication and repair, protein synthesis, and cellular signalling, among many others. Additionally, different types of cells in the body perform specialised functions depending on their location and role in the body, such as muscle cells contracting, nerve cells transmitting signals, and immune cells defending against infections.

Therefore, it is important to prioritise cellular hydration by drinking enough water and eating a balanced diet that includes hydrating foods such as fruits and vegetables. Maintaining proper cellular hydration can help to promote overall health and well-being, and it is an essential aspect of a healthy lifestyle.
