Nutrition and Dietetics

Dietetics is the science of food and how it affects the body. Our Accredited Practising Dietitians (Dietitians) design and deliver personalised nutrition plans that are safe, effective, and tailored to the individual needs and goals of people of all ages and abilities. Our Dietitians translate the most up-to-date nutritional evidence into simple and easy steps to provide guidance and education to support people to make healthy food choices to fuel their body.

Each person requires different food and nutrition to help support their unique body and goals. At The Allied Health Team we offer a holistic and personalised approach through our nutrition and dietetic services. With the support of one of our Dietitians, we firmly believe anyone can achieve their health goals and improve their quality of life.

Dietitians are experts in human nutrition. They have a thorough understanding of how the right nutrition can positively impact the body and deliver the results a human needs. Our Dietitians offer a comprehensive solution stemming from changes in food intake to meal preparation and planning. We can prescribe a treatment plan around your specific needs and current health condition.

Who can we help?

Everyone in Australia can benefit from the support of our expert Dietitians through either face to face, or telehealth consultations. Our dietitians work with people who are experiencing a poor appetite or who may be struggling with significant levels of weight changes. We can also aid those who have been diagnosed with these health conditions:

  • Diabetes

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Food allergies and intolerances

  • Inflammatory bowel disease

  • Eating disorders and disordered eating

  • Malnutrition

  • Obesity and weight management

  • Vegetarian and vegan nutrition

Our dietetic health services focus on ensuring the dietary advice is achievable, sustainable and will provide benefits to the long term health and wellbeing. We don’t believe in yo-yo diets or fads. Please also understand that one particular diet may work for an individual but may not work for another. We commonly see this with Keto and Mediterranean diets; if it works for you - great! Please don’t enforce it on others though, without allowing them to consult with their dietitian, or other suitable healthcare professional. Every human body is unique.

Nutrition and dietetics is a critical aspect of disability, healthy ageing, and aged care to ensure a person can continue to live their best quality of life. Our dietetic services are accessible through various funding bodies:

DVA

Veterans who hold a DVA Gold Card or a White Card (condition specific) will have access to our dietitian services.  A D904 referral to our dietitians is required from your GP to be eligible for bulk billing prior to commencing services with our dietitians.

NDIS

Our dietetics team will assist NDIS participants  by offering support and guidance to meet their individual needs.  We will consider their individualised food preferences, provide nutrition education specific to their needs, and will assist in life long behaviour change and improvements to quality of life. We will work collaboratively with the participant and their families, to set realistic and achievable goals towards healthy lifestyle changes.

Medicare

A dietitian can assist people who have complex needs or chronic conditions when referred by their GP through a chronic disease management plan. This enables access to a medicare rebate for up to 5 consultations yearly to assist with dietary needs. Eating disorder treatment plans can also be accessed when referred by a GP.

Telehealth services

Case Study

A 64 year old male with depression and type 2 diabetes presented with uncontrollable diabetes, which had been ongoing for several years. The client was lacking the knowledge, motivation, and medication to be able to get his blood sugar levels under control.  By providing guidance and education, alongside medical intervention from their GP, the client was able to reduce their haemoglobin A1c levels from 11.9 to 6.3 % over a 5 month period and reduce the risk of further health problems.  He is now equipped with the knowledge to make healthier choices leading to long term behaviour change.

A 67 year old woman with chronic leg and back pain presents with a goal of weight loss to reduce pain levels.   Due to a lot of misinformation on social media, she was lacking the knowledge on how to make healthy choices and was consuming a high number of discretionary foods which had caused weight gain over a number of years.  By making small realistic goals individualised to her lifestyle, and consistent guidance, education and support, she was able to achieve a 8% body weight loss.  She now  feels healthier and more energetic, and reports a reduction in her pain levels.

FAQs

Dietitian vs Nutritionist

Both dietitians and nutritionists provide a range of nutrition based services however a nutritionist can give themselves the title of nutritionist, without extensive qualifications and/or accreditations. A nutritionist might be someone that has completed a short weekend course and completed some self study while dietitians complete a Bachelor degree and many of them also have completed Post Graduate courses to specialise in specific areas. So while there are many great nutritionists out there that have incredible knowledge, there is a risk that you might encounter a nutritionist with very little knowledge, especially when it comes to physiological conditions and chronic disease.

The main difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist is a dietitian is qualified to work with chronic disease in addition to the  healthy population; however, a nutritionist is qualified to work within the healthy population group only.  Dietitians must hold a dietetics degree for them to be eligible to be registered as an Accredited Practising Dietitian through Dietitians Australia.  This program is regulated, and means they must commit to ongoing training and education to withhold this title, as well as abide by the Dietitians Australia code of conduct.

What can a Dietitian help with?

Dietitians are experts in food and nutrition, and provide individualised nutrition and dietary advice based on your health goals. Dietitians are trained to understand how nutrition impacts the body and use this knowledge to provide evidence-based nutrition advice to treat a variety of medical conditions.

There are many reasons why a person would benefit from the support of a dietitian. A person may be referred, or may independently choose to see a dietitian to assist with:

  • Accountability, support, and motivation for making sustainable changes

  • Newly diagnosed and/or review of chronic disease

  • Changes in food intake

  • Poor appetite

  • Significant weight change

  • Meal preparation and planning

Dietitians use a client centred approach to assess, diagnose, manage, and treat a broad range of health conditions such as:

  • Overweight and obesity

  • Heart disease, high cholesterol and blood pressure management

  • Gastro-intestinal health

  • Food intolerance and allergies

  • Endometriosis and PCOS

  • Enteral nutrition

  • Malnutrition

  • Diabetes

  • Oncology

  • Renal disease

  • Eating disorders and disordered eating

Do you need a referral to see a Nutritionist or Dietitian?

No, you do not need a referral to see a nutritionist or dietitian.

However, Medicare offers rebates for services provided by a dietitian if you have complex needs or chronic conditions. If your GP feels you meet the criteria you will be eligible for a referral which will compensate you for some of the costs of upto 5 consultations.

DVA Gold Card holders can receive dietetic services with no out-of-pocket expense, once they receive a D904 referral from their GP. In some instances a White Card holder may be eligible for this D904 referral as well.

Why Do You Need an Accredited Practicing Dietitian?

There are countless messages about healthy lifestyles these days. Many of these messages conflict and contradict with one another. As such, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction. The reality is that nutritional advice for one person may not provide the same benefits for another. For instance, someone training for a marathon will require different nutrition compared with someone weight training to build muscle. This is why the support of an APD can be invaluable. Dr Google may not always be the best place to turn to for advice.

Will Treatment Always Include A Meal Plan?

Your treatment plan may not always include a complete or comprehensive meal plan. Whether this is necessary will depend on your individual goals and whether you already have a variety of healthy meal options that are part of your main diet.

Why Choose Us

Our team of dietitians use a client-centred and individualised approach to treatment. Being part of a multi disciplinary team allows us to provide you with a holistic approach to treatment. As well as providing a comprehensive approach to nutrition and diet we also specialise in delivering a completely personalised service. This may include a few hot tips from one of our other services we offer, to complement your nutrition and diet advice.

Countless private health and public health organisations attempt to fit groups of people into certain categories and repeat treatment plans that have been effective in the past. We don’t do this because we understand every person doesn’t just have unique health issues, they are also working towards specific goals that matter to them on a personal level. You may want to reduce symptoms of a health condition, achieve a desired weight, and feel more energetic throughout the day.

An APD will sit down with you directly and discuss your individual health concerns and goals, helping you formulate the best treatment plan possible. We use health science to craft individualised treatment plans.

Our primary goal is your complete satisfaction. If you are not 100% happy with the consultation we offer, take advantage of our money-back guarantee.
